Wrestling Basics

Before attending a wrestling match as a spectator, learn a few basics about the sport, and your enjoyment will increase along with your understanding. Knowing some of the basic holds will help you follow the action on the mat. Wresting is fast - most regulation bouts are three to five minutes - so plan to watch as many as possible to get a "feel" for the sport. Knowing how the points are scored is also helpful because some matches will be decided on points scored, rather than a "pin" or a "fall."

Observing a few common courtesies - sitting in your seat, not blocking anyone's view, not shouting at the officials, not criticizing the form or technique of a player, not arguing with other spectators - will make you a welcome spectator at any match. Any spectator who behaves in a manner that is considered unsportsmanlike conduct will be asked to leave the match.

Here are a few good things a parent can do for the team:

  • Let the coach correct errors. That's his/her job.
  • Don't dwell on any team member's "mistakes."
  • Support each wrestler. Offer encouragement, especially in defeat, and congratulations in victory.
