Performance Task:

 

 

You are a technical writer for a power tool manufacturing company.  It is your job to make a safety and operations manual for a power hand tool.  You will need to research texts and current manuals for the information needed for your specific tool.  You will write a manual that includes the following: 

a)  Name of tool, brief description, photo/diagram on the cover, model number for your
     specific tool. 
b)  Safety regulations for the intended consumer. 
c)  Operations procedures. 
d)  Photo/diagram depicting and labeling the necessary parts of the tool.

 

 

 

Knowledge / Skills:

 

 

Apply in writing the rules and conventions of grammar, usage, punctuation, paragraphing and spelling.  (ela1)

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Understand and use graphs, charts, and visuals to enhance informational writing and oral presentations.  (ela29)

Understand the nature and purpose of and be able to word process a variety of formats including essays, business letters, memos, instructions, policy statements, technical proposals, user manuals, lab reports, etc.  (ela30)

4  POINT =  The manual is concise and clear.  It completely describes the operation procedures and emphasizes the necessary safety concerns for the intended consumer. The graphics (photo/diagram) add to the appearance and clarity of the manual.  No errors in content or mechanics.

3  POINTS =  The manual is concise and clear.  It describes the operating procedures and emphasizes the necessary safety concerns for the intended consumer. The graphics are satisfactory.  No more than 1 content and 1 spelling error.

2  POINTS =  The manual is not concise.  It is incomplete in its description of parts, safety and procedures. The graphics are not relevant to appearance or clarity.  The manual is not in the proper manual format.  It has few  errors.

1   POINT =  The manual is confusing and lacks pertinent information. The graphics are not included.   It contains many content and spelling errors.
