Born on July 6, 1946, George W. Bush is the son of former President George Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush, and brother to Florida Governor John (Jeb) Bush. He grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas, enjoying Little League baseball and the Cub Scouts. He received his bachelor's degree in history in 1968 from Yale University, and then his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

In 1969, Bush attended flight school and flew F-102s with the 147th Fighter Wing, 111th Fighter Squadron of the Texas Air National Guard. After his service, Bush moved into the oil and gas business in Midland and continued to work in the energy industry through the next decade.

In the summer of 1977, George W. Bush met Laura Welch at a dinner party hosted by mutual friends. Within the year, Bush and Laura, a former teacher and librarian also from Midland, were married at a small service attended by close friends and family. Bush ran for U.S. Congress, unsuccessfully, in 1978. In 1981 his twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna, were born.

When his father ran for office, George W. Bush moved to Washington, D.C. to help his successful 1988 presidential campaign. Determined to make his own political career path, George W. Bush is now the only Texas governor ever to be elected to consecutive four-year terms.
