Introduction
Suggested Lesson Plan Procedures

1.  Ask students to name the sports that are played in the Summer Olympics. Brainstorm and list on board.

2.  Using a computer with Internet access and a projection device, share the complete list of sports. Visit the Sydney 2000 Official Web site. Demonstrate an easy method of navigating to the site:

  • Go to www.olympics.com

  • Click on Kids

  • Click on Sportzone

  • Click in Kids' Guide to Sports

3.  Explore a sport to familiarize students with the site.

  • Click on Archery and read the simple description.

  • Under "Find Out More About Archery" click on "All About Archery" and read the detailed information.

  • Demonstrate other links on this page.

4.  Assign each student a sporting event to research and explain the assignment. Each student will:

  • Use the Sportzone Web site to research a sport.

  • Take notes from the site using the Sports Notes handout as a guide.

  • Prepare and deliver a brief (three–five minute) oral presentation incorporating information from each Sports Notes category.

  • Turn in Sports Notes paper after presentation.

5.  Explain that during student presentations the audience will want to listen carefully because the information presented will be useful when the class is divided into teams for an online Trivia Race Quiz. Students may choose to take notes that they will use when playing the Trivia Race Quiz.

6.  After the final oral presentation, explain how the Trivia Race Quiz is played.  Emphasize that if students don't know an answer they can click on a link to get a clue.  Students should work collaboratively with their teammates to answer the Trivia Race Quiz questions.  Teams will report their score to the teacher when they finish the Trivia Race Quiz.

Using a computer with Internet access and a projection device, demonstrate the Trivia Race Quiz Web site.   Demonstrate an easy way to navigate to the site:

  • Go to www.olympics.com

  • Click on Kids

  • Click on Sportzone

  • Click on Trivia Challenge

7.  Divide students into teams consisting of two to four students per computer and let the game begin!
