Science for the Millennium 5 Star
National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois
Cyber-world's fair for state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits in fundamental and applied science. Focuses on astronomy and astrophysics, advanced computation, and virtual environments. Includes features on radio astronomy, general relativity, cosmology, computational technologies for advanced scientific research, and virtual worlds. Other exhibits are under construction. Multimedia presentations integrating text and movies on aspects of astrophysics provide superb tutorials for introductory-level astronomy. Featured presentations cover topics ranging from the discoveries and potential of radio astronomy, Einstein's general theory of relativity, black holes and gravitational waves, the use of supercomputers to model black holes, and the evolution and future of the universe.

Access Excellence - Genentech 5 Star
Extensive resource program for high school biology teachers. Provides several interactive forums to enable educators to contribute and exchange information and ideas. The "What's New" section covers recent news, developments, and interviews on biology and related science. Detailed laboratory and classroom exercises, tested by contributing educators, include practical material regarding target audience, necessary equipment, and preparation time. The broad range of exercises presented here offers a wealth of information to the biology or general science teacher, but the primary feature of this site is its wide array of bulletin boards and other forums. General discussions of teaching theories and methods contribute to ongoing forums on specific topics such as advanced placement, bioethics, and new biotechnologies, combining to create an online community that will enhance the skills and repertoire of any educator.

Windows to the Universe 4 Star
Roberta M. Johnson et al. / University of Michigan
NASA-funded virtual museum for space and Earth science. Contains rich multimedia exhibits on the Earth, our Solar System, stars, space missions, and mythology. Includes images and movies of astronomical objects, paintings related to mythology, and images of scientists and natural philosophers; a list of science fiction films (with basic information about them); a collection of poetry relating to space and mythology; brief biographies of dozens of famous scientists and philosophers from the ancient world to the present day; recent news stories in astronomy and Earth science; links to data and image archives; a teacher's guide; and a "Kids Space" for games, projects, and questions. This museum is beautifully designed and easy to navigate. It is also graphics-intensive, with a number of QuickTime and Shockwave files. Although "the content within the site is developed at three different levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced)," which the individual user selects, the common treatment of topics, roughly aimed at the high school level, skirts strict scientific accuracy at times. Nevertheless, the site provides a solid, entertaining introduction to astronomy and to mythological beliefs about the heavens.

The Why Files 4 Star
National Institute for Science Education, University of Wisconsin--Madison
Award-winning project, funded by the National Science Foundation, to explore "the science behind the news." Includes up-to-date, entertaining, nontechnical tutorials on many science and technology topics that have made the news recently (e.g., the discovery of planets beyond our Solar System, the discovery of new types of life in harsh terrestrial environments, the 'mad cow disease' panic, nicotine addiction, the status of electric-car technology), with links to additional Web resources. Also includes 'mini-features' and 'brain-teasers' on the science behind sports. Sponsors an online forum for the discussion of science-related issues. 'The Why Files' is an especially good resource for teachers.
